Window film for front door glass and sidelights

A front door often has glass in three places: in the door itself, in tall sidelights beside it, and in a transom window above. Each pane gets its own piece of film, cut to the glass. Here is how to measure, which listing to use and what it costs.

  1. Where the glass is
  2. Measure
  3. Which listing
  4. Your price
  5. Frosted or rainbow

Quick rules

  • Measure the glass, not the frame
  • One piece per pane
  • Not for heavily textured or pebbled door glass

1Where the glass is

Door glass, sidelights and transom

Door glass: one large pane, or many small panes like a French door.

Sidelights: tall, narrow panes on one or both sides of the door.

Transom: a wide, short pane above the door.

Measure and order each one separately. Panes of the same size go in one order, with the cart quantity set to the number of panes.

2Measure

Measure the visible glass of each pane

Measure the glass you can see, in inches, inside the frame or the trim around it. The longest side picks the price tier, and you type your exact width × height on Amazon.

Amazon shows the final price at checkout. Tape-measure fractions like 21 1/4 work in the price box below.

3Which listing

One big pane or many small ones?

Large panes and sidelights

Use the custom listings: each piece cut to your width × height, priced by the longest side from $4.99 (12 in) to $132.99 (96 in). Over 46 in on the shorter side, it comes in two pieces at no extra charge. Amazon shows the final price at checkout.

A door with many small panes

Small divided panes have their own listings: a 10-pack of pre-cut 6 × 12 in pieces, and a per-pane listing for frosted panes up to 20 in. The French door guide shows which fits.

Before you buy

Frosted film blurs the view by day and at night, but at night with the lights on inside, someone close to the glass can show as a soft silhouette.

Rainbows show in direct sun only.

Neither film holds on heavily textured or pebbled glass.

Type 21 1/4 or 21.25. Glass only, not the frame.

4Frosted or rainbow

Privacy at the door, or color?

Frosted blurs the view through the door glass and keeps the hallway bright. At night with the hall light on, someone close to the glass can show as a soft silhouette (privacy at night).

Rainbow casts color into the hall when direct sun hits the door glass, so it suits a door that faces the sun (when it makes rainbows). It gives light privacy only.

Decorative door glass is often textured: check yours first with the fingertip test.
