Honest answer · Your glass

Will window film stick to textured or pebbled glass?

Short answer: yes on smooth glass and on lightly textured glass, like many bathroom windows. No on heavily textured or pebbled glass. Both films are low tack: they need enough flat contact with the glass to hold, and deep bumps leave too little. Check your glass before you order.

At a glance

  • Smooth glass: yes
  • Lightly textured glass: yes
  • Heavily textured or pebbled glass: no

1Why texture matters

The film holds where it touches the glass

SHINECOR film goes on wet and holds with a light, low tack adhesive. That is what lets it peel off later without residue, and it is also why it needs contact: the adhesive holds where the film lies flat on the glass.

On smooth glass the whole sheet touches. A light texture still leaves plenty of flat contact. Deep bumps and pebbles hold the film up on their tops, with gaps in between, and the film lifts.

Three glass surfaces seen edge-on, each with film laid on top. On smooth glass the film touches everywhere. On lightly textured glass it touches almost everywhere. On pebbled glass it touches only the tops of the bumps, with gaps marked in orange. Smooth ✓ holds Lightly textured ✓ holds Heavily textured or pebbled ✗ lifts

2Three kinds of glass

Smooth, lightly textured or pebbled?

  • Smooth glass: yes

Flat, clear glass in windows, glass doors and shower doors. The easiest install of all.

  • Lightly textured: yes

A light texture, like many bathroom windows, still leaves enough flat contact for the film to hold.

  • Heavily textured or pebbled: no

Deep bumps, rounded pebbles or a strong ripple leave too little contact, so neither film holds there.

3Test your glass

The fingertip test

A quick check tells you which kind of glass you have.

Not sure? Which film suits your glass has the same check next to photos of both films.

Close-up of frosted film: a fine crystal grain that sparkles where the light hits it.

The frosted film close up: the blur comes from the film, so plain smooth glass is all it needs.

4Pebbled glass

Pebbled glass? We’d rather say no

If your pane is heavily textured or pebbled, neither SHINECOR film is right for it. We would rather tell you now than have the film lift a week after you install it.

The good news: pebbled glass already blurs the view, so many of those windows have privacy built in. For the smooth panes in the rest of the house, the films work as described.

Before you order

Neither film holds on heavily textured or pebbled glass. Check your pane with the fingertip test.

5Getting a good hold

On lightly textured glass, cleaning matters most

Spray soapy water onto the glass and gently scrape it with a razor blade, then finish with glass cleaner until it is spotless. Leftover bits make small air bubbles under the film. Wet both the film and the glass generously, then squeegee from the center out.

A little trapped water is normal and evaporates within the first week. The full steps, with photos and a real video, are in the install guide.

Before you buy

Frosted film blurs the view by day and at night, but at night with the lights on inside, someone close to the glass can show as a soft silhouette.

Rainbows show in direct sun only.
